the first story

once upon a time there was a grandmother who made vada and sold them, she'll eat the last vada as her food.
one day a crow took away the last vada, grandma became sad, and started to cry, her beloved pet, a dog named dommy, wanted to help her, so he went to the tree where the crow took shelter and said, "how  beautiful you are, i want to hear your sweet voice, so please sing for me", the crow became overjoyed and started to sing, kaa kaaka ... the vada fell from its mouth, the dog picked the vada and gave it to grandma, both lived happily ever after.

the moral of the story is, if i don't have anything to write, I'll write these kind of things, so forgive me

Give windows a “bash”

How many of us, who love the power of command line feel handicapped when it comes to windows, with its pathetic cmd.exe or command.exe, I was missing the auto-completion, multiple tabs, and most importantly the commands, pipes, redirection, tee, I am not sure of the windows equivalents of these, so I was looking for some way to Linux-ify my widows.

Being a TA required me to compile few softwares for windows (skyeye, softgun, arm-elf-gprof etc...), so I had to choose between MinGW and Cygwin, first I started with MinGW and found it quite inadequate, since Cygwin gives a complete Linux environment, I settled for it, but I still miss the tabbed terminals, I was searching for “tabbed command prompt” in google and found a few links but none were open source, some how I stumbled upon a blog where they have mentioned about Console2, an open source one currently under development, so I downloaded it and am pretty happy about it, now i'll give a step by step procedure how I got a almost working gnome-terminal(or Konsole) alike...

  • download and install cygwin
  • download and extract console2
  • open console2
  • press ctrl+s to bring settings dialog
  • go to tabs option, click add change title to you something you want, select cygwin.bat from CYGWIN_HOME, press ok
  • now if you want a cygwin terminal press ctrl+f2 (assuming the cygwin appears below console2)
If you dont want cygwin then you can use gnuwin32 package, and add its wbin folder to path and just use console2 with all the power of unix

Banana, Good day & mineral water

what is your favorite mode of travel, 3-tire AC, Business class air travel or a private cruiser, mine is unreserved train travel, i.e.. general compartment, my friends who knows Hindi can recognize my Hindi knowledge which is mostly attributed to train travel, “Yatrigan kripya jyandije .. ghadi number ... Mumbai sai Chennai central sub janevalli ....platfrom number .. aaye hey”, ya I know its not exactly Hindi, but this is what I “hear”.

I haven't tried any form of luxury travel in my life before coming to IIITB, some times I end up paying 190 bucks for Bangalore-Mysore trip because its a bit faster and I can sleep properly(it doesn't mean i cant sleep in other situations), the one thing that I miss after coming to Bangalore is train travel (the other one is hot sun).

I don't know how many of you will agree that it's fun to travel in general compartment, the never ending line of vendors selling anything like chikkus, bananas, roasted ground nuts, murukku and other eatables.

I observe that most people in reserved compartment are well planed families who have the idea of hygienic food (i.e. Cooked and packed from home) or people who don't hesitate to spend money in branded products or people who hesitate to buy from these poor vendors, why others, even I feel awkward to buy and eat from these vendors when I travel in reserved compartment because no one else will be doing that, so I decided to be a general compartment person.

I even calculated the amount of money I spent on eating in one journey, 200 bucks is not that bad you know, few cups of coffee, two or three cups of tea, masala tea, tomato soup , ground nuts, samosa, a dozen of chikku, one or two custard apples, bananas blah blah blah ...

I always board the train with Deccan Chronicle and Hindu (why two?), I have to take care of my cloths which are mostly light colored ones (I have to wash them), so DC helps here..i travel light, light in sense real light(both in money and luggage), I didn't have a mobile phone, mostly I'll be unshaved and wouldn't have had a haircut, a small bag with a set of cloths and some books, every time I reach home I'll be hearing the same comment (grandfather: who will believe if you say you are a college student, mom: why torture me every time, all our relatives know about your pathetic state, I wont find a girl for you, dad: no girl will come near you) irrespective of what time I reach home (mostly around midnight), followed by “did you eat?”, the obvious answer is yes, no matter weather I ate or not, I don't want to trouble my mom to prepare something at that time, first of all I wont inform her, giving her an unpleasant surprise, and she'll be very angry of my appearance(don't forget the long nails).

I think I understand the kind of people who do general compartment travel, some wired people(Me!!), daily travelers, some people who didn't get a reservation or unplanned journeys, some poor people who don't know that reservations exist or can't afford that, etc.. however very few people enjoy journeys the way I do(I think), the heavy wind (some times hot) that hits your face when you sit near the door, the struggle to hold sambar from flowing out of plate, the water splash on face(people wash their hands thro the window, ya I know yuk..), fight between kids, elderly people, general discussion that ranges from politics to daily life, hmm It feels good.

But I should caution, if you don't like to sit with dirty people, hear some unpleasing words, worry about sitting comfortably through out the journey, or people snoring in your ears please stay away.

Other than that it's a wonderful experience to know about the majority of India, eat good snacks and fruits at throw away price, get good flow of air, and most importantly get to know some “good” bad words.

Welcome, to a new world of journeys

PS: what is “banana, good day & mineral water”, my regular food/eatables during journey nowadays, I cant expect vendors at every stop in bus, can I?.

infront or infront of back

sounds crazy right, i could not come up with a sexy title for (pre or post increment operators in c), anyways today the issue of pre/post increment operators in c, sagar and i had a good 15 minute discussion how this works so he results are here

int i=5;
printf("%d,%d,%d",++i, i, i++);
/*
output: 7,7,5
*/

how, we understood that printf evaluates from right to left, so it'll do i++ first and return '5' and update value of i i.e. 6 in stack, the middle i is just i, the first ++i, will increment value of i in stack i.e. it becomes 7, now it'll examine the value of stack finds i=7, therefore it substitutes 7 as first and second argument

int i=5;
printf("%d,%d,%d",++i, i, ++i);
/*
output: 7,7,7
*/

how, we understood that printf evaluates from right to left, so it'll do ++i in stack i.e. 6 in stack, the middle i is just i, the first ++i, will increment value of i in stack i.e. it becomes 7, now it'll examine the value of stack finds i=7, therefore it substitutes 7 as first and second argument

because in post increment operator, the assignment happens before increment, therefore in case one 5 is assigned or returned, and get incremented on stack.
fair enough understanding i think.

Nurses or NCurses

the first time i saw this package was during Fedora Core 1 installation, a nurses package... what a funny name or is it really for nurses, but i forgot about it.
next comes kernel compilation for Advanced OS class, where make menuconfig reports some error in ubuntu.. after some digging someone found out that we have to install libncurses-dev package for it to work, and i remembered that funny incident that happened 3 years before.

the assignment questions seemed simple
  1. Observing “Linux“ behavior“ by writing a program to use the  /proc  mechanism to inspect various kernel values
  2. Learn how to write a UNIX—style shell program
what big deal, half the program is in book complete it and finish the assignment, my "proc" will intelligently display the status of the program if you give PID, and as an unexpected move Prof SN was completely "satisfied" with our work so we have to redo it.
so i want to add interactivity to my shell , that is history, command completion etc.. , so i have to capture keystrokes, but what shit, ours is not a complete shell, so the shell that we run on didn't give us the keycodes that we expect .. after a lot of blah blah .. nurses or ncurses came to resuce, there is a getch() function will capture all keys if we set keypad(stdsrc,TRUE), done...

worked for three more days to "port".. when every thing is working .. Hmm this is not what i wanted SEGMENTATION FAULT, why the hell!!, Hmm if do chdir() there is a seg fault, i got bugged of curses so had to revert back to non-interactive shell, but i can upgrade my proc code to work as a task manager (like top command) again 2 days of work, i could implement killing a process provided you have sufficient access rights, ya i know it has lot of flaws but i believe it is a "proof of concept" , now ask me do something in ncurses, i can do it with a bit of struggle.
next is a file manager in queue .. (long live ncurses ).

food for thought: try "tpp" the ncurses based based presentation program, ultimate, so decided to torture people with "tpp"  (available in ubuntu/debian repos)

Movie Morning ...

we all would have heard about and experienced movie nite's, here is a place where we have movie mornings.

After making sure that i sleep early and get up early (save my wife) i have good amount of noise free time in the morning (say 4 to 8), first i thought about preparing for placements but god thought in different way (ya i believe in god vijay), gouuth@tLL happened and postpone that placement preparation forever...

I thought about doing my TA work, you know its difficult to work when nobody is around to disturb you (hostel effect), so i decided to go to college early ( say 5) and browse hoping that the internet speed will be good( and it is), gradually i got bored of it (actually 2 days), so i had to find some other option to "kill" time, then my old habit(actually CEG habit) of watching movies 24x7 seemed to be the best option, so here i am watching those all damn old movies(some even 20 times), suddenly i felt guilty when everyone in college is doing something important in life ( like sleeping ) WTF i am doing, so i want to see what others are doing, so today i instead of starting a movie directly took a look around and viola, there were 3 groups of people and of which 2 are ... watching movies .. what a good encouraging sight, i hurried to start my MOVIE.

so very soon expect some worst movie reviews here (PS: i kinda like all movies...).
I should say early morning walking alone in cold weather , going to infy for coffee is a damn good one, i urge everyone to try it once in every year ...

Lock "Stock"

after getting bugged by the internet speed, response time of nseindia.com & bseindia.com, java in firefox and the pain in maintaining a portfolio, i decided to build my own portfolio manager, here are the specs
1. Database: Postgresql
2. Programming Languages: Python(to populate database in 15minutes interval, using ystockquote module), JSP
3. TOMCAT (Obviously)

currently i have finished the database part, i think it's working fine. i am now in the process of building the front end, so i am going to use eclipse-europa-jee for that, wish me luck.
i'll keep posting about my progress and the details

How do i Flush!!

Most programs i write suffer from either stdout or stdin not getting empty when it is supposed to (when using Eclipse CDT, explicit flush id required for me to print anything).
while i can flush stdout using fflush(stdout);, i cant do the same thing with stdin, this was creating a major headache for me, and i came across a site which gave a code snippet to clear the buffer
   int ch;
  while( (ch = fgetc(fp)) != EOF && ch != '\n' )
   /* null body */;

Where is my Pointer

being a TA, its my job to help the students when they encounter any problem in implementation or tools used for their projects, when Joseph said that  his program is receiving SIGSEGV, i thought it must be some simple problem either the index of array is not proper or memory not allocated, so i started to debug and Voila! the program works just fine giving correct output.
we all were wondering what is wrong, and eclipse(CDT) was the first target, but debugging in eclipse also worked fine, and now we decided to go manual line by line checking so few things are observed
  • they wanted a 2D array for which they know that the column size is two and row size should be dynamically allocated
  • Array of pointers were used
so i said to them, "fine, but i think we should convert those array of pointers to double pointers", and they agreed, so the next run gave the same SIGSEGV error.
now its time for more digging, so i prefer to user -Wall option to clean and make my code perfect, there i noticed one warning, function returns reference to local pointer, voila got it... so changed the function a bit, instead of returning a pointer we passed a pointer to the function and worked on it, and the result SUCCESS.
it shouldn't have taken much time for me to find out, being an OS student, we always deal with functions(system calls) which take pointer as an argument instead of returning them, so there must be something wrong/bad in returning the reference to local pointer, the memory gets lost!!!. but why not in debugging, the only reason that came to my mind is when debugging the memory areas used by the program is locked till it is freed or the program ends.

SciTE, Compile and Run

Lately SciTE is becoming my favorite text editor, (VIm rules always), i find the menu options Tools->Compile,Tools -> Go useful for beginners who are new to Linux/Programming,  but i found that even though it compiles properly, it does not execute it(i.e. run  ), Why?

few minutes of digging gave me these results
First: umask for files is 022, i.e. files created by user will be read/write for the user and read only for group and others
Second: compilers will know that they are creating executables and set executable bit when they produce .o/a.out files
Third: if "." is in your path, then the executables are searched in current directory as well

Now the solution:
SciTE uses gcc -c <filename.c> -o filename.o to compile a file, and filename.o to execute, i got the error "bash - access denied", i opened a terminal and tried to execute it by myself, still an error,
why?
when we compile with -c filename.c, we ask the compiler to just compile and don't link it, i.e. it creates an object file and not executable object file, so if you run, it'll produce the access denied error message.
so open cpp properties and remove that -c option, add "./" before executable i.e. ./filename.o

Now the more interesting points:
  1. SciTE reads config files when it loads, so any change you make you'll have to restart it
  2. also all but user config files should be edited as root
Disclaimer:- i dont know the impact of removing -c option, it might be useful in large or multi file programs, so please consult your manual for exact details.

Stupid Me, System.currentTimeMills()

for(int j=0;j<100;j++)
{
    java.util.Random rnd = new java.util.Random(System.currentTimeMillis());
    for(int i=0;i<100;i++)
    {
        System.out.print(rnd.nextInt(10)+"");
    }
    System.out.println();
}

please don't expect the above program to give 100 different sets of 100 random numbers, there will be repetitions like anything. why?
First: for a particular seed a Random number generator should give same set of numbers, when ever it is run,
Second: our computers are fast enough to finish execution in micro seconds

so the generation of 100 numbers takes few micro seconds and the System.currentTimeMills() has resolution in milliseconds so, a week of stupid searching and debugging, here is a post.

how to fix it:-
use new Random(); forget about seed, this produces 100 different sets of 100 random numbers.

Live life, king size

i was traveling in a bus, i saw an old person who gave proper change to buy his ticket, but when the ticket checker came the old man didn't have the ticket to show to him, to everyones surprise he didn't even fight that he had bought a ticket, he paid his fine and started to leave.
a few people who got curious of this asked him about it, he told "i got a ticket, but the boy (who was walking at some distance) didn't have one, i have seen much more humiliation in life and those things don't matter to me anymore , but the humiliation the boy would suffer will hurt him for a long time, so i decided to give him my ticket".this is life, and i believe that he has lived his life to the fullest. or in other words living life "king size"

Change in Life Style

Finally i am changing my lifestyle, i started to keep track of my work, thanks to mozilla sunbird, an awesome tool to keep track of my activities, its already filled with 3-5 events/tasks a day, good to monitor the progress of my tasks.

i am not sleeping at regular timings now, its very difficult to get up at 6.30 if i sleep at 3/4am so i decided not to force me to wake up at 6.30 but if i wake up before 7.30 i'll go for running.
last week is one of the most productive week, i am working full time to meet deadlines well before they approach.

Took a session on GDB & GProf to Prof Mihir's students, one and half hour of non-stop blabbering, teaching GNU tools to DSP students is a hectic task, but the students are smart, a few questions were asked and students are actually following, anyways i am going to be their mentor once their c implementation of projects starts.

I still haven't setup all the servers in GIS lab, I'll try to do them in the next 2/3 days, i also applied to "special assignment" of prof .Nagarajan,  will get to know about that once i meet him.

I successfully bunked all placement meetings, i should attend all meetings here after.
KK work is very interesting and Prof KVD is screwing me royally, at the end of the day i get to know many things, thats the only thing that keeps me going.

Still haven't started AOS projects, Prof Prabhu's Assignments, this week is again going to be a busy one, anyways i am not tired of working, i think i still have a lot of energy left in me to do a lot more things than what i am doing now.

Thinking about reviving the JVM forum, may be we can ask juniors to give JAVA ksm's so the forum is atleast alive.

Ha, a lot more of dreams are still pending, an extension of firefox, reading Knuth etc...
if i end up doing thesis, (i want to) I'll be able to fulfill most of my dreams
once the word dreams came to my mind, i realized that i still haven't downloaded DRM radio code and looked into it, will have to do it.

How do we live life?

When I look back, I had taken a lot of decisions, some are good and some are bad.

But sometimes if I think about it, I could see that I have not made any decisions but things fall into place and I seem to accept them.

Why do I accept whatever I get in life (be it school, college, grades, pocket money & friends)?

A little story about my childhood will explain. I lived most of my life in hostels (from kinder garden to PG), that too about 7 different hostels. The hostel life kept me prepared for most extreme situations in life, be it late night travel in train without reservation or carrying excess luggage when vacating hostel, most importantly dealing with people.

My idea of present having more importance than past no matter how good or bad it is has helped me adapting to new environment easily, accepting things and people the way they are.

Sometimes I'm more possessive about something which eventually fired back, now I realize that more possessive you are, not only you are hurting yourself but everyone around.

Anyways we (I) live life by either by "choice" or "circumstance". But choice leads to confusion and circumstances lead to dissatisfaction, in other words we (I) live life either in "confusion" or "dissatisfaction".

Why so?

Life can be looked upon in two ways (good ways to live, forget about lot of other "ways", that may give you an impression of living, believe me it's not)

  1. Everything is important in life, we can control or take care (or at least try to) of anything
  2. Everything is beyond our control, accepting things or people the way they are is the only thing that we can do

I do get confused, by which way I am living my life, I can say 50-50 (very very tasty tasty) , being "confident & not complaining" is the first way of life and being "mature & accepting" is the second way of life

Confidence we all know about it, has been taught to us in different ways and most of us seem to have it, at-least for some amount of time in life, the same can't be said about maturity, it can't be taught but should be understood and cultivated.

Let us understand what is maturity?

Sagar said, "the understanding of what the fuck I am doing & what the fuck others are doing and how it affects each other", I am perfectly fine with his point, but at the same time "understanding" of things, the way they happen is the first step in maturity, I'd like to take an example, if I ask "whom do you think are the most matured people?", most likely your answer would be a grandfather or a grandmother you know, why?

The reason is, they are the one who have seen many ups and downs in life, and they have no more of expectations from any damn person in this world.

If we ask them their suggestions about our life, they'll answer it in a committed manner as it's their life, why they don't differentiate people as them, I & we.

It simply means that "not only the understanding, but accepting everyone in this world by the way they are" is maturity.

Why accepting?

Accepting in the sense, no expectations for the help/life that we are going to do/live, giving importance to others problem as our problem and finally the "unconditional love", it's very difficult to find a grandma who discriminates her grandchildren and other kids (kids in the sense all those who are a even bit younger than them), also a grandpa who cares about your education, work and life, offering his simple but useful insight for almost all the problems that we face.

That grandpa and grandma don't expect anything from us, other than talking to them, they are not to be left alone in their elder age, it you don't take care of your parents, and then you are a sinner.

This shows how difficult it is being mature, it takes a lot of time to understand and settle down and that's why only old people are considered mature.

Now comes the question to myself "how are you going to live?"

Good question, I am trying to keep it 50-50 till I become old enough to change it to 0-100

Quote of the day:- after I felt so crazy about writing this blog it suddenly occurred to me, usual disclaimers apply, I may have read it somewhere at some point in life and I may be simply recalling it, in that case due credit to whoever has written this.

"No matter how crazy you think you are, there are crazier people out there, if you think people are crazy, you are crazier than them"

Innofest' 07

Ya, i know it's odd to post about an event that happened 4 months before (to be exact march 23, 24 of 2007) but if i don't speak about this now chances are that, no one will speak about this(from first person view at-least).

Ok...
Innofest, 07
Redefining Innovation

it all begins with an E-Cell meeting, where "mama" , "chotta" & "shasank" were fiercely opposing "bulb's" idea of conducting something "big" in campus, like a B-Plan competition, mama's argument was if a technical institute like ours doesn't have an techinical event then why the hell we should have an management event.
Asusual i was sitting in that room, not as a E-Cell member but doing some 'reddit'ting and 'orkut'ting, the meeting ended when no one had the energy to shout more, mama came to me and asked "should we have a technical event?", a landmark question that changed our life for next few weeks.

I had barely spoken to him before, i was happy with my own work and group but that was an opportunity for me getting closer to mirindastic(read fantastic, we don't like fanta) group, the most feared and kept away group by most commoners in the institute due to their love and affection towards "loud & strong language" also the unity amon
g them when it comes to kicking or getting kicked in birthdays.

After initial mails to groups(janitors & sanitors, ha ha ha, Sagar i am sorry, that 'j' & 's' words popped in my mind yesterday night while going for dinner, an institute slang for Juniors & seniors) the initial response was non-committal encou
ragement, sagar was the only person to reply "we are a bunch of techies, & we can do it".(and he did it, more comes below)
in the mean time i volunteered for Magazine team(and not even a single meeting or contribution from my side), i became Intranet admin, took 5 subjects instead of four
(this calls for another post) and started to enjoy life. after some initial mumbo jumbo mails, nothing really happened.

The time for organizing "spandan" came and people are very much interested in utilizing this opportunity to "go home", Imanpreet called for a meeting of all teams and asked "should we extend this as an inter event instead of current intra one?", that one question he asked and did some initial moves of talking with registrar etc (when he claimed credit for the event, people were angry at him, but guyz we should accept it, even though we started and did all the work, the networking of people from various teams was "at-least" initiated by him) .

The team was formed and we met Professor SS (one more post pending for him), and he was so happy that students are taking off their time to do something that is good for the institute and enhancing their organizing and inter-personal skills, and he happily said "NO", the reason that he gave was "you people have unreasonable expectation and you are not capable of doing an event where a lot of bad can happen along with the good, blah blah blah.."(sir, how did you get this too much power of convincing people to your way without them feeling hurt?)

And, we raised our voice, (if two counts for we, then its mama & me) again blah blah blah, ok, a "48" hour deadline to prepare a business plan that'll convince him to say go ahead, with a disclaimer "none of you can claim any discount in studies, no on-duty stuff, sir i went for this, i did this... kind of stuff".

at the end of 48 hours(all the dramas by our fellow mates, God, thank you for this opportunity to judge people), we were in his room with a business plan.

some silence, some questions and some answers (since i was the typesetter of the plan, i was obliged to answer the questions), he said "OK, looks promising, go ahead, but in very small manner. only bangalore colleges, quick and fast two day event, don't worry about finance institute will arrange for it, remember bad news propagates faster so whether you are doing good or not, don't bring bad name to institute",a weekly review and report was promised and we are on our way to create the first ever inter event of the institute.

Here come our struggle for next 30days, the bashing from my mom for not coming home for 3 months, screwed up 3 of 5 subjects, none of the projects are actually progressing, the fighting with mama over poster design (whenever he said "everybody liked it", I'd say "nobody will like it"), website downtime, campaigning planning, last minute postponement due to "Iron maiden" concert, brochures, flyer's, placement of logos, t-shirts, sitting with vijay for Quiz questions, bugging seema for any damn thing, begging for laptops to our classmates blah blah blah...

And its tomorrow, the event , prof SS said that he'll be there at 7.45 to wake up students if they are not seen in campus.

Cricket match screening, damn India lost the match

now the timeline starts:
10.00pm : WTF!!, where are the registration forms, ID cards, volunteer badges, ok relax, Ducky will take care(print out) of it tomorrow morning as his first job.

11.00pm:

me: what are you doing?,
them: indicators you know which room which event etc...
me: if you girls don't have any work please go sleep, cant we take a print out of them and put it. (now i know why i don't/won't have a girlfriend, kidding...)

12:00midnight

what wastefellow, two events are overlapping, aargh, mama, wait i am coming,
finally the schedule was reorganized so "only two events overlap".

01:00am
guru, started to arrange tables and chairs
someone: we can ask the housekeeping people to do it in morning
me:(go kick yourself, in mind of course)see they'll come around 7.30 and prof will be here by 7.45, i don't want to feel the heat.

03.30am:
fuck!, i need a double coffee

someone: infy will be open
me: if we go there it'll take an hour, so forget about it, get back to work.

05:00am Sagar cant walk properly, duck was okay, i was some how managing to keep myself awake, seema and others were doing the welcome ppt and schedule information.

06:00am: Sagar, "traitor" went to sleep, that effectively leaves me & Ducky in college.

06:30am:Ducky is going to sleep, fuck!!, ok the the most important thing to do in the morning is "get the event banners, fuck how can we forget about them", Ducky said, relax i'll make sure that the banner will be "up" and "flying" before the event begins.

07:00am: begging with some more seniors for their laptops, Ducky is a psychologist, knows how to talk to people.

07:30am: bathing, dont see the bed, dont see the bed, there is no bed in your room, all you can see is the bathroom and toilet, ok relax take the towel out of your room now run to take bath ...

07:45am: Wah, i am back to work, started calling seema, Mama, Ducky & sagar, everyone should be present before profes...,here he is, he did as he said went to hostel to wake up people(its embarassing you know).

08:00am: "where are the banners, guys?", aha, the inevitable question that'll occur to any damn person coming to the place where the event is scheduled, "Ducky"..i shouted, "it'll be here any moment..don't worry" was the reply.

the printer guy said "no power, no printouts", again prof came to our rescue, he gave his printer to take printout of about 500 pages.

and you know the real excitement ends here, as things start to roll, more people came in to help us, the usual thank you list goes this way

Laptop team, guyz you are the heart of the event, any little mistake from your side would have toppled the event

Guru, KP & others, u guyz rock, thanks for eveything, every minute you spent your energy is worth a million rupees (but dont ask me for it)

sumeet for his amazing website building skills

all our classmates, most people gave their laptops, few people went home, few people didn't mind to see what is happening in the institute, anyways thanks

there are few names deliberately left out, not because i don't want to thank you, but i don't want to just "say" thanks and finish it off, I'll be thankful to you all for my life, you gave me the hope that "we can do it" and "we are doing it" in this semester too.
thanks for everything (somebody help me!!!)

Day 1 of event: 10.00pm this is what will happen if you don't sleep for 40 hours straight

and JC gave a treat, "you did it", a nice person who acknowledged our struggle and effort, she was happy that we did it something that their class didn't bother to do it.(aha i can still feel the taste of that lassi & mirchi soda)

Happy birthday to me!, I am 23 years old

Wah, what a fantastic day today(Actually July 1st, never mind continue reading) is my birthday, thank god I am able to walk (are you still wondering?)

Birthday’s during college times are both an exciting and most feared occasion of every damn person, the understanding is

"have few enemies, but very few friends"

at the end of every birthday you’ll wonder, whom you should fear most, your enemies or your friends.

let me show you how i "enjoyed", step by step.

1. It begins as "all that begins well" kind of a story

2. next they'll make you feel comfortable 3. then they'll show their love and affection

4. then they'll fire at you

Ahhaaaaaaa

Do they(we) know the meaning of "Mercy"

5. Holy dip in college pond (Imagine freezing cold, and scented water)

6. I know i am a good dancer, but i never thought that i could be a "pole dancer"
7. A cake, Ahaa.. i was always successful in garbing the biggest piece in everyones birthday, i decided to do that in my birthday too, the result ...

Ya i did get the largest portion of the cake, but unfortunately it didn't go to my stomach, but all my cells on my face skin got to eat a bit of that chocolate cake.

here comes the conclusion,
how many people called me to wish happy birthday, 2 missed calls in morning during breakfast time, my parents called me after two days and i had to remind them that i am 23 yrs old now, 2 sms's and 4 orkut scraps marked the end of my celebration, aha who cares, i celebrated my birthday after 6years.
why so, first things first, my birthday falls on July 1, so i'll be mostly in home (grandfather's) and no body had the guts to shout there after or before 6'0 clock (am & pm), there birthday is just another day.
also I am completely against materialistic pleasure way of life, i believe that in life we have much more to do rather than wasting time & money in the name of birthday celebration, same philosophy made be agree to these celebrations, if my dancing around the pole can make my friends happy, for the sake of their happiness i can do that once a year, after all, these are the people whom i am put up with both in good times and difficult times.
Pranav & Vijay's gift was my "first" ever birthday gift, thanks to them(again completely against my philosophy of saying thanks to friends, it shouldn't be in words but should be in action).
now i have few questions to ask myself:
  • why the hell i am not caring about gifts and wishes? in the sense, i was not able express my surprise when Pranav & vijay gave me "the surprise", also i dont mind people not wishing me, no matter how close they are. only God Knows, the answer.
  • how i spent my previous year? good/bad/ugly? i'd say it was good, bad as well as ugly. Good in the sense "Innofest" i did my best to make it happen, bad because i flunked all my projects including my favorite OS project , ugly in the sense i realized that i was not paying attention to people, i refused to accept people the way they are, but this realization has helped me in throwing away my dislike towards certain people, i stopped judging people, my expectations about people has come down and moreover i am ready to face the consequence of being good and honest.
  • how i am going to spend my next year?, well, good i suppose, do a lot of work (curricular i suppose, i always excel in extra/co/non curricular stuff), give good tutorials and tests to juniors, don't flunk the subjects, dont try to download "all" possible Linux distributions, C/Java/Python master them, try to blog as much as possible.

Summer of 07

I have decided to blog about interesting people I come across in my life, it starts with my summer course faculty.

Prof Shridar:

Imagine a 60yr old man, wise man I should say, with a humor that'll make we youngsters envy him.

Prof shridar is someone whom I would accept as a role model for my life, a man of good manners and sense of humor.

His way of explaining a stupid subject like "Accounting" is simply awesome, and the story of his two wives (please read the rest…) one sales tax and the other is service tax, how we should not deal with one and think about other.

To mention his timing of explanation of concepts

He: What will you call a person whom talks to himself…?

We: he he he…

He: that's what the Government thinks of a person who tries to sell to himself in the name of "branch transfer".

Good/Bad/Ugly whatever it is, sir I envy you, I respect you & to be honest you rekindled the fire inside me which wanted to become a CA when I was young.

Prof Padmini Srinivasan:

Mam, now I know why an IIM Grad is worth the salary he/she gets, I am also happy to the amount of screwing they'll go through in the process of "learning" accounting.

Prof Hema:

Women whom I meet nowadays (Prof JB, Prof Uma Maheswari, Prof Padmini, Prof Hema) has changed my perception about women which I had from my school days. These are the ladies who are knowledgeable, humble, modest and kind to people (to students at-least let's say), again Prof Hema has inspired me to work towards becoming a CA (sounds wired to be said my an M.Tech IT student).

Prof Krishnamurthy

Prof shridar in another form, unfortunately he came for only one class, damn I have a very poor memory how the hell I can forget his jokes (I should sleep less in class)

Prof Shankar

I am really scared to work for "any" company after his lecture, it simply said "you can be fired regardless whether you obey/work properly or not"

I want to commit suicide

Funny, Huh…

But it is not funny, I sometimes think about my life and how I have lived it. Ha ha ha… got you ..

Let it go, my trusted astrologer has said that I am going to live till 95years of age, so I don't want to waste time in thinking about committing suicide.

Now that I had taken up so many responsibilities I am not able to pursue my favorite pastime (u know, regulars)

You may wonder about what work I am doing. Let me list them

  • An event for a Big Company (thankless volunteer)
  • Teaching Assistant, I have to work hard so not only juniors but also me learn the subject, the most important thing is "I don't want to act like suk-la"
  • Advanced OS, Prof SN has said that weekly tests are going to his evaluation methodology, the good thing is "I want to study Operating Systems", the dialog I said in my MTech interview will come true.
  • KK, the never ending ocean of maths
  • MFC, iiitbians know about it.

After a long time I am feeling at home, work is chasing me and I am chasing people to work, if the Event that we are organizing becomes a hit then I can, what to say, establish a confidence in myself.

Few Good (Wo)Men

i used to wonder, why it still rains in india(in some sense the world too), Kali has taken everything into control(i really hate paritchithu maharaja) poverty, exploitation of people, rich and powerful suppress the poor and needy,

These are the three incidents that i have seen in past few months, has made me realize why it rains and how even i can bring rains. i leave the conclusion to you

  1. in erode – chennai Kovai Express, two kids aged less then 12 the boy is the elder one and the girl will be about 8 years old, the boy is physically challenged and they are begging in that train, many people gave them alms, few choose not to, after some time they took a place in crowded compartment and rested for sometime, at the same time a group of young men found a two rupee coin on the floor of the compartment, they unanimously decided to give it to those kids, they asked that girl to come and pick that coin, to everyones surprise the girl didn't and that boy insisted her not to take, everyones(who are observing that situation) request was turned down, when asked for the reason that boy replied, “even though we beg, its completely wrong to take others belongings”. WTF!!, the whole world is busy in taking others opportunities in the name of competition but here a poor boy who has to beg for his bread has such a wise wisdom against “taking” others processions, the only thing that i could do at that time is to pray god(did he/she exist?) to give those kids a “life”.

  2. In chennai again, i visited “kradi” and Co and stayed in their place for 4 damn days, one fine Sunday morning i, kradi and kavin went out for breakfast and while returning i saw a tender coconut vendor, due to my determination of making kradi pay as much as possible for my food, i bugged him to get one for me, as a matter of fact he was happy(?) to do so, we asked for the one with more water and less coconut, to try our luck we decided to cut it open for coconut and we had a thin layer of it, when kavin gave his coconut to open his,the vendor(a lady) put her knife hard and the coconut flew away and ended up in sand, we decided to walk away since we asked for coconut with water so the chance of coconut in it is very less, but that lady apologized for that incident and gave one more coconut for FREE!!, WTF!!,Mediocre but Arrogant(read MBA) people will say it as "customer satisfaction", "business tactics" or whatever, but a poor uneducated coconut vendor took us all by a surprise of her thought of how customer should not feel dejected by her fault(should i start a business, i'll keep her actions in mind), i feel that its more of love or concern towards fellow human being rather than a business strategy.

  3. In coimbatore, we(vijay, pranav, sagar, nikhil & me) went on a trip to my home followed by some road roaming, we went to velliangiri foot hills and were returning to coimbatore & we wnated to go to mettupalayam, we didn't know the way and were asking for directions from several people , of which one person asked us to follow him (WTF!!, a ford ikon following Tvs 50),anyways we thought "since he is on his way he asked us to follow", after some distance he stopped and said “take this right and you are on the way” and “Turned back” towards his way, What the... we realized that he traveled just to show us the way, there is no need for him to do this, a simple sentence like “go straight take the second right” would had been sufficient, but something inside him said that these people are new to this place and they are required to be shown the correct point, i think not only his helping tendency but also his concern towards fellow human begins has created an impression in us.

But now comes the irony, event though all the three incidents took place in tamilnadu and it “never” rains here.. he he he.....

Back to Alma Matter

Last week(May 23rd) I paid a visit to my Alma matter…to collect my Degree certificate, wow!! what an experience the entire process got over in about 15 minutes, the fastest process ever I have seen at Anna University.

I am happy also sad to see Uma maheswari madam as new HOD, she can do much better than any 55yr old, at the same time she won’t have much time to spend for her research.

It is not a surprise that George sir remembers his student, also Patnaik sir, its good to see good people after a long time, George sir’s “what are you doing”, and Patnaik’s “yes please, take your seat” also Uma Maheswari madam’s smile. [smiling assassin, Prof JB has a good competition here ]

Since my Laptop’s charger went “broke”, I offloaded “KK” work to PAN, god knows what will happen with that IC Engines work, Hmml ets see…

Now the regulars…

This Kradi bugger made me pay for that Juice and Cake, 200 bucks gone, now I am seriously think about taking juice in any big malls or bright lit stores, 65 bucks for a juice that tastes same as 7.50 bucks juice at Anna University Canteen, Hmm god knows how I am going to save money in this highly priced environment.

2 days at Kradi & CO’s house, regular cycle of work you know. [for beginners, eat, sleep… ]

Next two days…yeah.. again regulars...

Block Block, Orkut & GTalk

Ha ha ha
finally the inevitable end has come, Orkut and Gtalk has been blocked in hostel.

This is under suspicion for a long time, when they had a test run few days back, but i have to appreciate the fact that my download speeds has increased from 110Kbps to 160Kbps, now more downloads in less time.
those who are still thinking of how fast the speeds would be, i can download about 4GB of stuff in about 7Hrs.

But i should really appreciate the time chosen by the Network Admin to block websites, 3-days before exam, no one had the time or energy to complain, but the sad part is that blocking is also based on keywords, i cant event search for "sensex" in google, WTF?

anyways i always believe that "where there is will there is a way", so i had the will now i have the way [to access Orkut/GTalk or what ever], a bit painful but it works
now take a pencil and write down the steps (Don't expect me to give all details, there is always fun in digging thro')

1. Intall "the" browser (all those using IE , press ctrl+d now ) [take back the web]
2. now install, foxy from FoxyTunes and Proxy from Proxy
3. find a anonymizer service
4. configure foxy to use anonymizer for blocked sites..

voila, you are done...

happy orkutting.....

relationships

last week was a disturbing week,

i started to evaluate my relationship with people around me and hmm... it didn't look good

i thought about this for a while and i realized for any relationship (love, friendship etc..) one has to follow these principles
  • respect him/her
  • respect his/her personal space
  • listen & talk less
  • Trust him/her
  • finally "Unconditional love" towards them
the above are something i think i'll follow and expect "no results", coz expectations are the real reasons for depression or failure.
